My favourite idol is Angelababy from China. When I first saw her was in a Chinese variety show called Keep Running. I admire her because she is very pretty and good at acting.
Life Background
Angelababy was born and named Angela Yeung Wing on February 28, 1989 in Shanghai. Angela is her English name which she later combined with her nickname Baby to form her stage name.
Angelababy's father is a half-Chinese and half-German whereas her mother is from Shanghai. She is her parent's first child and has seven years younger brother named Keven Yang Fan.
Her father used to run an apparel business in Shanghai. Angela grew up there till she was 12 and then moved to Hong Kong with her family.
She joined Notre Dame College and earned a degree from there.
Angelababy's interest in fashion was induced by her father. She loved going to her father's store and enjoyed experimenting with new looks.
When she was 14, her classmate sent her photographs to a modeling agency. The agency liked the pictures and signed her for a modeling assignment.
Angelababy's full-fledged career started at the age of 17. She was spotted by Style International Agency, which signed her for Jay Chou's Hong Kong Concert.
Angelababy made her big screen debut in 2007. She continued acting in many films as supporting cast until she got the role of the protagonist in "Love You You".
In 2015, she started acting in television series and also made her Hollywood debut.
Along with acting and modeling, Angelababy tried her luck in singing and got featured in many soundtracks.
Angela became the first Asian celebrity to be featured in a Gucci advertisement. She is also a spokesperson for Mercedes Benz, Asia.
She has been made the ambassador of China's Panda Protection Research Centre and Child Development Centre of China.
Angelababy had a secret affair with 12 years senior Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming. In 2015, her manager confirmed the news to media.
On 27 May 2015, their marriage was registered in Qingdao and had a lavish wedding afterward. Angela was called the Kim Kardashian of China because of the extravagance.
The 30-million-dollar wedding included an exclusive Dior wedding gown, a 10-foot tall wedding cake, and expensive gifts for guests such as cell phones. Her giant six-carat wedding ring cost a whopping 1.5 million Dollars.
On 17 January 2017, Angelababy gave birth to a baby boy and nicknamed him "Little Sponge".
Angelababy has invested in several businesses, including a nail parlour, a café with fellow Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Ka-fai and a lifestyle store.
In 2015, she set up her own venture capital fund, AB Capital. She then bought shares in Chinese overseas purchasing e-commerce site Ymatou and beverage brand HeyJuice.
In 2016, Angelababy entered the Hurun Philanthropy List, the youngest to be included. She and husband Huang Xiaoming donated US$2.6 million to a charity program initiated by Huang to help university graduates start a business or seek employment.
In 2020, Angelababy and Huang Xiaoming donated CN¥200,000 to hospital relief efforts related to the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic in Hubei.
In 2021, Angelababy invested in an entertainment company, Cool Style, which was set up by Media Asia and Louis Koo's One Cool Group. Cool Style's business scope includes artist management and related businesses aiming to cultivate new forces with abundant resources and platforms.
In March 2021, Angelababy expressed her support for cotton from Xinjiang, after several companies stopped purchasing the cotton due to concerns about human rights violations.
Challenges
Angelababy revealed that she has been struggling with depression from haters and cried every night to release her sadness.
Over the years in the entertainment industry, she has faced much criticism on her performance and skills. Many netizens and anti-fans have questioned her ability to sing and act and accredits her success to purely her looks.
In 2019, Angelababy was said to have gotten fewer drama roles as audiences were tired of her “sub-par” acting skills.
Behind her successful and unbothered image, Angelababy is much more affected than she let on.
In an interview with a Chinese news outlet, Angelababy broke down and shared that she was very upset that fans and haters have gotten access to her family members’ contact details and went as far as to harass them.
She said that management staff members contacted her parents to update them on how she has been. When she gets sick, they would inform her family without her permission and knowledge.
Through angry tears, she said that it is her choice to share certain things with her family. She does not want them to worry about her as she goes on her schedule.
Haters would also constantly send hate messages to her and her family about her and her son.
Besides, a cosmetic surgery clinic accused Angelababy to have undergone many surgeries. The clinic even labeled her as “plastic doll”. Angelababy sent a legal notice to the concerned company for these allegations. Angelababy produced her medical reports that stated her looks to be genuine and came out clean.
Another day, another round of speculation about Angelababy and Huang Xiaoming’s marriage being in shambles, and it is all because of a tiny reflection in a photo.
Angelababy’s close friend posted a picture of the two of them chilling on a yacht out at sea. Instead of seeing it as a simple holiday snapshot and leaving it as that, scarily eagle-eyed netizens pointed out that the boat’s rear-view mirror shows the reflection of a young man.
Internet sleuths soon determined that the man in the reflection was 22-year-old Chinese pop idol Cai Xukun, who had also shared a photo of himself on what was said to be the same yacht, in the same outfit.
Angelababy and Xukun are both regular cast members on Keep Running, so it is not that surprising that they would hang out together.
However, rumour-mongers decided to spread word that the two of them were dating, and that Angelababy had deliberately brought her friend with her on the supposed ‘love boat’ to throw people off the scent.
Before long, the topic of this “married woman and her little fresh meat lover going out to sea” began spreading like wildfire on Weibo.
A more serious response came from Angelababy’s publicity team, who issued a statement saying that her work studio has already sent a lawyer’s letter to the person who started the rumour on Douban.
Even Angelababy’s poor friend, who posted the photo that kicked off this whole saga, felt compelled to take down the pic and implore the public to stop spreading rumours.
She also declared that to protect Angelababy, she will refrain from sharing anymore updates about her outings.
Achievements
In 2013 13th Chinese Film Media Award, for her performance in the film "First Time", Angelababy was awarded the "Most Anticipated Actress" award.
Also in 2013 9th Huading Awards, Angelababy won in the category of the actress with the most media popularity.
She also won Most Charismatic Actress award in 2013 and 2019 Hong Kong Society of Cinematographers (HKSC) Awards.
In 2014 21st Beijing College Student Film Festival, yet again, Angelababy won the award in the popular actress category for "Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon".
In the 33rd Hundred Flowers Awards, for her excellent performance in the film "Mojin: The Lost Legend", Angelababy won the award in the "Supporting Role-Female" category.
In 2014 Weibo Awards Ceremony, Angelababy was awarded the “Weibo Queen”.
In 2015 Iqiyi TV and Movie Awards, Angelababy won the Jury Award as the “Breakthrough Movie Actor of the Year”.
In 2016 Hundred Flowers Award, Angelababy won the “Best Supporting Actress” for her performance in the film “Xun Long Jue”.
In 2019 The Actors of China, Angelababy won the “Outstanding Actress” in the category of Female Actor in a Television Drama, with her performance in the film “Wo De Zhen Peng You”.
